What impact did the rescue of Apollo 13 have on my life? In the following months, I reflected on the rescue and concluded God is real and answers prayer. Studying the Bible, I found He could do for me what He did for Apollo 13. As He kept the crew's hatch to the lander's safety open, He could open doors in my life which could save me. I read what God's Son Jesus said in Revelation 3:20, "...I stand at the door (of your heart) and knock. If any man will open the door, I will come in..." In other words, I needed to open the door of my life to God's Son Jesus Christ.
Apollo 13 needed guidance back to Earth when its tank's refuse blinded its view. My view of God was blinded by sin, fear, and a feeling of unworthiness. I needed someone to guide me to God. Again, I found the answer in the Bible. Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the WAY, the truth, and the life. No man can come to the Father except by me." Jesus Christ was THE WAY TO GOD.
Apollo 13's drained batteries imperiled the safe return to Earth. Like the weak batteries, I needed power in my life to overcome insecurity, doubts about my future, and especially a fear of death and eternity. The scriptures spoke to this as well saying, "As many as received Him (Jesus), to them gave He the power to become a son of God." (John 1:12)
The Lord Jesus Christ, who heard the prayers of 14 children and moved a hurricane, promised to answer my prayer. "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son." (John 14:12-14) If I would invite Jesus Christ into my life as Lord and Savior, He promised to honor my request.
And finally, as a space engineer, I knew that Apollo 13 was subject to fundamental scientific equations put forth by Newton, Kepler, and other scientists. Likewise, the Bible was a textbook of spiritual fundamentals put forth by the Holy Spirit.
I discovered a sure fundamental equation in the tenth chapter of Romans, the ninth verse, "If I would confess the Lord Jesus with my mouth and believe in my heart that God had raised Him from the dead, I would be saved." February 11th, 1972, I confessed Jesus as my Lord and Savior and believed in my heart that God raised Him from the dead. Since then, I have desired to pray and read the Bible daily as well as share what Christ has done in my life. He has become my only lifeboat.
God has provided a lifeboat for you, too, from His Mission Control Center above. That lifeboat is His Son - Jesus Christ. If you would like to get on-board "in" Him, pray this prayer sincerely, and God will honor your request:
LORD JESUS, FORGIVE ME OF MY SINS. I BELIEVE YOU DIED FOR ME ON THE CROSS AND ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD. I ASK YOU THIS DAY TO BECOME MY LORD AND MY SAVIOR. THANK YOU LORD FOR COMING INTO MY LIFE...... AMEN.
